STUDENTSPEAK
A WILD LIFE
WHEN WE GOT IN TOUCH WITH ANUP B PRAKASH, HE WAS IN NAGALAND CONDUCTING A SURVEY ON MAMMALS AND REPTILES AS PART OF HIS COURSE — MSC IN WILDLIFE BIOLOGY AND CONSERVATION. HE SHARES HIS REASONS BEHIND PURSUING THE COURSE
For me pursuing an MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), was a big leap. I had pursued my engineering from RV College of Engineering and worked for a couple of years. Wildlife was always in the back of my mind. It’s a pleasure to see animals in their prime habitat. It has always been a passion with me. I used to visit national parks, look out for news related to them and was part of NGOs like People for Animals that work with animals. I used to get excited when I spotted bigger animals. Then I decided to do something concrete about it, and I came across this course. It did not ask for a background in biology, which was an advantage. Instead, the little statistics and maths I knew are helping me in my subjects now. Veterinary science would not have helped me, as opportunities to work with wild animals were not assured.
It took me some time to convince my parents. Since I am from a middle-class family, they would have preferred a regular job and a steady income. At the moment, I am loving what I am doing. I have been to the Periyar Tiger Sanctuary, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary. I want to go deeper and pursue a PhD. I do not want to specialise in one particular species but work on landscape and conservation. This course is a blend of both.
